Do people really capture their tears in a bottle?
Yes, based on feedback, about 10% of our customers do capture their tears. Most people use the bottles symbolically. Either way, the tear bottle history offers a compassionate way to commemorate times of joy and sorrow.
How do I catch my tears?
Capturing tears is quite easy. Remove the cap and hold the rim of the bottle against the side of your nose, about an inch below the corner of your eye. Most teardrops will roll down along the edge of your nose. As they touch the rim of the bottle, the shape of the rim will draw the tears inside.
Will my tears discolor or mold over time? Will they evaporate?
Possibly. Human tears naturally contain proteins and bacteria. Even in a sterile environment, discoloration may occur. Timeless Traditions Victorian and Roma tear bottles use medicinal quality bottles and silicone stoppers for a strong seal. To reduce the chance of discoloration, fill the bottle as much as possible to reduce the amount of air. The silicone stopper will prevent almost all evaporation. If you want to preserve the contents of your bottle permanently, you should use a wax seal around the rim.
The cap seems stuck, how do I remove it?
The top has a very tight fit to protect tears from evaporating. A twist on the cap as you pull the lid should remove it fairly easily. You will also need to twist as you re-insert the cap. You should be able to twist pretty hard without risk. Our caps are lubricated with Solar Oil to ease removal. If you open the bottle frequently, you may need to add more oil.
Will my bottle’s metal finish tarnish?
So far, the bottles seem to be very resistant to tarnish. I haven't seen any oxidation on the pewter and gold bottles after a year or tarnish on the silver. The manufacturer uses an anti-oxidizing compound to reduce the amount of tarnishing.
How can I clean my tear bottle?
You should be able to use any cleaning solution designed for fine metals. Chemicals with ammonia, like Windex, can increase oxidation and damage the bottles.

Can I use my tear bottle to save ashes?
Yes. Many have uses tear bottles as miniature urns. They are much less expensive then traditional urns and allow remains to be shared among loved ones. The tight fit of the silicone cap will protect remains if the bottle should fall. Coleen Miller tells the story of her tear bottle urns: “My husband passed away 9 weeks before our child, a son, was born. I put a small portion of my husband's cremated remains in each bottle. One is for me and one is for my son, in case he later expresses an interest in having some of the remains himself. The bottle is a beautiful vessel holding the remains of the love of my life and the father of my child, and will serve to remind me of him every time I look at it.”
