Frankincense and myrrh are gum resins (or sap) from trees grown around northern Africa and Saudi Arabia. Frankincense was brought by Balthasar, the king from Ethiopia, fulfilling Isaiah's prophecy that gold and frankincense brought by Gentiles would honor the heavenly king [Is 60:6]. Myrrh is a yellowish to reddish brown aromatic resin with a slightly pungent taste. We believe that Caspar brought the gift of myrrh from Europe (or Tarsus) for Christ.

Gold represents a gift fit for a king; frankincense is a symbol of Christ's divinity and His priestly role; Myrrh, which was common in medicine and embalming, symbolized Jesus the Great Physician, and the Passion.
